Goldstein's Big Day Propels No. 12 Illini Past Panthers

CHARLESTON -- Jason Goldstein knocked in 6 runs, including a grand slam, to help Illinois sink EIU 14-10 Tuesday.

Goldstein was named the Big Ten player of the week, after batting .600 in a 4-0 week for the team.  He backed it up, going 3-for-5, a triple away from hitting for the cycle.

Illinois (25-6-1) opened a 5-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to Goldstein's shot and a league-leading 8th HR from David Kerian, extended his current hitting streak to 18 games.

EIU (1-24) responded with a 2-run second and a 4-run third to take a 6-5 lead.  Illinois starter Cody Sedlock lasted 2 2/3 innings, giving up 6 runs - 4 earned - and 8 hits.

Reliever J.D. Nielsen came in a threw 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, as Illinois regained the lead with another 5-spot in the 4th.

Ryne Roper added his first homer of the season in the 8th.

Illinois is off to their best 32-game record in program history.
