DECATUR - American Red Cross officials are offering central Illinois residents several tips that could help keep them safe during severe weather.
Officials say residents should make a home disaster plan, which includes deciding on a safe place in your home for family members to gather during a storm. This area should be away from glass doors, windows, and skylights. Residents are also urged to protect outdoor animals by ensuring that their shelters are protected in the same way as your home, and to remove pets from vulnerable dog houses and similar small structures.
Officials also say residents should create an emergency preparedness kit that includes a first aid kit, medicines, non-perishable foods, water, flashlights, batteries, and a battery-powered radio. Residents are encouraged to prepare for high winds if they have the time by securing outdoor property, and to heed storm warnings as well.
