This Is Not Chump Change

Urbana – State universities are spending an extra $135 million dollars in procurement costs to buy everything from pencils to lab equipment according to State Senator Chapin Rose, (R) Mahomet.

“This is not chump change stuff,” Rose told WAND state capitol reporter Doug Wolfe.  “There are things we could do here short of raising people's taxes.”

Rose says the “top heavy and bureaucratic procurement law” in Illinois is driving up prices.  It's costing the University of Illinois an extra $70 million.  “Come on guys.  $70 million for just the U of I alone?  That's unbelievable.”

Rose is introducing legislation next week to allow universities to make their own purchasing decisions without going through red tape in Springfield.  He hopes to get his bill passed within the next year.
