Standoff in Charleston ends in 6 arrests

CHARLESTON - Authorities say a standoff in Charleston ended in the arrests of six people.

The director of the Coles County Probation Office tells WAND that a routine probation home visit at a house on Pierce Avenue in Charleston turned into a standoff on Tuesday morning.  Under a pretrial order, the home's residents were to comply with home visits.  However, authorities say that officers received no answer at the home, but heard movement inside.

Authorities say that officers then called for backup, with personnel from the East Central Illinois Task Force, Charleston Police Department, and Coles County Sheriff's Office responding.  A drug task force told officers that weapons and drug activity could allegedly be taking place inside the home, so the Coles County Crisis Response Team was called out.

Police say after several hours, six people were brought out of the house without incident.  After searching the residence, police say all six people were arrested and taken to Coles County Jail.

This incident is still under investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies.  We will provide updates as they become available.
