Salvation Army Citadel to temporarily suspend homeless shelter services

SPRINGFIELD - Heartland Continuum of Care officials have announced that homeless shelter services at the Salvation Army Citadel will be temporarily suspended beginning on April 28.

The suspension of services at the Citadel, located at Ninth Street and Adams Street in Springfield, is due to improvements being made at the property, and is expected to last for the next 14-to-16 months.  Officials say all homeless individuals will be referred to other shelter agencies for services as needed.

Officials also say that all Salvation Army Corps services, which include utility assistance, emergency transportation, food pantry, health clinic services, clothing vouchers, Supportive Services for Veteran Families, life skills, youth character building and older adult programming, and Bible study and worship services will resume at 221 North 11th Street on May 4.

Officials from Helping Hands of Springfield and Contact Ministries also say they will also assist in this transition.  We will provide more details as they become available.
