Illinois Senate to consider mental health legislation

Posted:
SPRINGFIELD - Illinois state senators are considering legislation that would allow colleges to share mental health information of students with parents.

Under the proposed legislation, parents would receive information from the college on their child's mental health if the student gives permission, and if the student was found to be a danger to others or themselves.

According to State Senator Dave Koehler, the legislation was inspired by a central-Illinois family whose college-aged son committed suicide.  Koehler says the student's college couldn't communicate with the parents due to Illinois' current law.
