SPRINGFIELD - The Sangamon County Sheriff's Office has announced the death of long-time Correctional Officer Sgt. Carl Bennett.

Authorities say Sgt. Bennett was involved in a single car accident at the intersection of 9th Street and Jefferson Street at 5:52 a.m. Thursday morning.  The Springfield Police Department is investigating this incident.

Officials say Sgt. Bennett was hired by the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office in January 1989.  In April 2000, he was promoted to the rank of Corporal, and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in December 2003.  Sgt. Bennett worked as a supervisor at the midnight shift in the Sangamon County Jail.

Sangamon County Sheriff Wes Barr said that Sgt. Bennett's death was a big shock to the entire Sheriff's Office, and that he was very well respected and will be missed.
