U of I officials push to name dorm after first Native American graduate

URBANA - University of Illinois officials say a new dormitory will be named after the institution's first Native American graduate.

Officials say the new dorm will be named Wassaja Hall after 1884 university graduate Carlos Montezuma, whose birth name was Wassaja.  Montezuma was born in Arizona in 1866, and became an advocate for Native American rights after graduating from medical school.

The new dorm is expected to open in August 2016.  The University of Illinois Board of Trustees is expected to vote on the name during their meeting on May 7.
