EIU to prohibit smoking, use of tobacco products on campus

CHARLESTON - Eastern Illinois University officials say smoking and the use of tobacco on the school's campus will be prohibited beginning July 1.

Officials say the use of all tobacco products will be banned on all campus property, in accordance with the Illinois Smoke Free Campus Act.  The ban will also include e-cigarettes and vaporizers.

Use of tobacco products will only be permitted in private vehicles, provided that second-hand smoke is contained within the vehicle.  This policy will apply to any individual on campus property.

Officials say it is likely that first-time offenders will be given a verbal warning, with multiple offenses being dealt with on an individual basis.  For more information on this new policy, visit http://www.eiu.edu/about/tobaccofree.php.
