150th Anniversary Commemoration of Lincoln's Funeral Underway

SPRINGFIELD - It's a big day in the capital city as the events surrounding the 150th anniversary weekend of President Abraham Lincoln's funeral commemoration are underway.

Starting at 9:00 AM, people can view a replica of Lincoln's coffin and funeral Hearse at the Amtrak station in Downtown Springfield. Several direct descendants of the original pallbearers will take part in the procession to the Old Capitol Plaza.

The commemoration includes a funeral procession and more than 1200 Civil War re-enactors. This weekend's event attracted re-enactors from around the world. Participants came from as far away as Croatia. Encampments are set up throughout Lincoln Park and part of the Benedictine Campus.

Sunday's procession route will follow the historic route to Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Events are planned throughout the weekend and many are free to the public. For a full list of events, click on the link (http://bit.ly/1GQdKVL).
