HSHS St. Mary's Hospital offering free car seat safety checks

Posted:
DECATUR - HSHS St. Mary's Hospital officials have announced they will hold free car seat safety checks for parents and guardians on May 8.

This event will be held on at HSHS St. Mary's Hospital in Decatur from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.  Officials say motor vehicle injuries are the leading cause of death among children, and that many of those deaths could be prevented by placing children in appropriate car seats and booster seats.

Officials also offer parents and guardians the following tips to help cut the risk of serious and fatal motor vehicle injuries by more than half:

- Children under the age of two should be placed in rear-facing car seats.
- Children over the age of two should be placed in forward-facing seat until they reach the seat's maximum height and weight limits.
- A booster seat should be used until the seat belt fits across the shoulder and hips.
- Children under the age of 13 should be seated in the back seat.
