National Nurses Week Kicks Off With Celebrations at Central Illinois Hospitals

URBANA--Wednesday is the first day of National Nurses Week 2015: seven days devoted to recognizing those who give care for a living, and understanding how they do it.

They are the eyes and ears of hospitals everywhere and in Central Illinois, nurses will be honored for their hard work all week long.

Earlier this year, Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana was recognized for its excellence in nursing with  a prestigious Magnet designation, which is handed out to fewer than 300 hospitals in the United States. And that recognition makes this year's Nurses Week especially rewarding for the nearly 2000 nurses who work there.

"We celebrate who we are, but we also want to make sure that we get the message out to the community, to people, to understand what nursing is, what nursing does," said Pam Bigler, Carle's chief nursing officer. "And how important the role of nursing is for not just for our hospital patients or our clinic patients, but for the community."

To do that, Carle will select 26 nurses and friends of nurses recommended by their peers to be recognized as nurse exemplars for their outstanding dedication to providing the best care possible.

Carle's nurse exemplars will be honored on the last day of national nurses week, May 12th.
