Senate committee passes aquifer protection measure

SPRINGFIELD - Legislation that would provide additional protection to the Mahomet Aquifer has been passed by an Illinois Senate committee.

The Senate Environment Committee unanimously approved the measure on Thursday.  Under the proposal, manufactured gas plant wastes would be prohibited from being buried at any municipal landfill in the state, and any manufactured gas plant waste would be required to be tested for toxicity before being buried.

The bill comes after a settlement between the DeWitt County Board and a landfill company over a failed plan to dispose of PCBs over the Mahomet Aquifer.  The legislation was recently passed by the Illinois House.
