Springfield officials approve renovations in neighborhood near historic site

SPRINGFIELD - Springfield officials say they have approved a renovation project for a portion of Abraham Lincoln's old neighborhood.

Officials say the beautification project, estimated to cost about $600,000, will include landscaping, new period lighting, and upgraded sidewalks for the area just south of the Lincoln Home National Historic Site in Springfield.  Approximately $475,000 of the project's cost will be paid for by a federal transportation bill, with the city covering the remaining balance.

City officials expect the work to begin later this year.  More than 200,000 people visit the historic area annually.
