Springfield officials gathering public comments on uncovered artifacts

SPRINGFIELD - Springfield residents will have a chance to voice their opinions on what should be done about unearthed artifacts related to the 1908 Springfield Race Riots during a public meeting scheduled for Monday.

Officials say the meeting is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. at the Prairie Capital Convention Center.  The artifacts were uncovered during the construction of a rail underpass in October 2014, as part of a rail project.  At this time, construction has been put on hold while officials consider ways to handle the site.

The discovery of the artifacts, which include the foundation of homes that were burned down, has resulted in state lawmakers and community organizations asking for more transparency on how those artifacts will be handled.
