Decatur Police Department participating in Click It or Ticket campaign

DECATUR - The Decatur Police Department is teaming up with the Illinois State Police, the Illinois Department of Transportation, and hundreds of other law enforcement agencies throughout the state to kick off the 2015 Illinois Click It or Ticket campaign.

Police say the campaign begins on May 11.  During this campaign, police officers will be looking for drivers and passengers who are not wearing their seat belt.  Under current Illinois law, all drivers and passengers must wear seat belts, both in the front seat and the back seat.  Authorities say back seat passengers accounted for 48 deaths and more than 7,500 injuries in Illinois, with passengers not wearing seat belts in half of the deaths.

Decatur police say that residents should always buckle up, and should remind their loved ones to do the same.  Additionally, authorities are reminding residents that children are required to be in a car seat or booster seat until at least the age of eight, and children under 13 should ride in the back seat.
