Former Champaign and Decatur businessman sentenced

CHAMPAIGN – A former Champaign businessman will spend the next two years in prison for filing false income tax returns.

Michael Fogerson, 52, will begin serving his 27 month sentence on July 20.

Fogerson was the owner and operator of the Smoke Shack in Champaign and the Smoker's Den in Decatur.

Both of the businesses remain open under new ownership; they are not connected to the incidents in this case.

Fogerson was also ordered to pay more than $460,000 in restitution to the IRS.

The IRS seized $835,421 from Fogerson during the investigation. The money was allegedly deposited in amounts of less than $10,000 to avoid getting caught.
