Illinois House to consider union proposal

SPRINGFIELD - A proposal that would allow workers in Illinois to opt out of unions is scheduled to be discussed by the Illinois House on Thursday.

The proposal is one of several pro-business reforms that Governor Bruce Rauner wants state lawmakers to approve in exchange for additional revenue to be used to close a multi-billion dollar gap in next fiscal year's budget.

Under the proposal, union membership would be voluntary instead of mandatory at unionized workplaces throughout the state.  However, opponents say this proposal would have a significant impact on middle class families.
