Urbana police investigate stabbing incident

URBANA - The Urbana Police Department says one person has been arrested in connection with a stabbing incident that happened on May 13.

Urbana police say officers were dispatched to a home in the 1300 block of Brighton Drive for a report of a home invasion.  Upon arriving, officers say they found that the apparent intruder had left the area.  As officers began their investigation, they received a report of a stabbing victim arriving at Carle Hospital.  Police say the officers realized that these incidents may be related.

Authorities say initial investigative efforts show that the stabbing victim, a 38-year-old male, had allegedly come to the residence to collect a drug debt.  Police also say the male was someone that the occupants of the home knew, and was not an unknown intruder as first reported.  Urbana police say during the alleged confrontation of this debt, the male allegedly punched a resident of the home, identified at Shane Castelo, 21.  Castelo then allegedly stabbed the male in the abdomen.  The male then left the scene and went to Carle Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Urbana police say Castelo was arrested on preliminary charges of aggravated battery after officers interviewed multiple witnesses and examined crime scene evidence.  Police also say the male has survived surgery and is recovering at Carle.

The Urbana Police Department is continuing its investigation into this incident.  If you have any information, you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at (217) 373-8477.
