IDOT announces $8.4 billion road improvement project

SPRINGFIELD - Illinois Department of Transportation officials have announced the start of a multibillion-dollar road and bridge improvement program.

Officials say the six-year, $8.4 billion project will focus on maintaining current roadways instead of constructing new ones.  IDOT officials also say that federal aid is paying for most of this plan.

However, IDOT officials announced that this project will not be enough to keep state roadways in acceptable condition, as it is estimated that only 62 percent of highways will be in good shape at the end of the program.  According to IDOT Secretary Randy Blankenhorn, the agency is searching for long-term, sustainable funding.
