Lincoln Monument Association hosting Ice Cream Social

SPRINGFIELD - The Lincoln Monument Association is inviting central Illinois residents to learn more about historic trees at Oak Ridge Cemetery during an old-fashioned ice cream social on May 23.

Officials say the event will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the bell tower behind the Lincoln Tomb State Historic Site.  The Springfield Municipal Band, dulcimer group Wildwood Strings, and speaker Kathryn Harris will be in attendance.

Visitors will be able to enjoy cake and ice cream for a nominal fee, followed by a tour of the cemetery's historic trees.  Interpreters will be positioned at 20 different locations to provide more information about specific trees.  In addition, each tree has been labeled with GPS coordinates and a QR code, which provides more information when scanned.
