Bergner's partners with St. Jude for a fun fundraiser

FORSYTH--The rain may have moved the fun indoors at this year's "Bergner's for St. Jude" fundraiser, but it didn't dampen the fundraising.

Saturday marked the fifth year that Bergner's at Hickory Point Mall hosted a big blowout all to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The one-day pop-up shop featured a craft show, silent auction, and even some face painting, all to help kids battling cancer.

"There's a lot of good things going on here today," said event coordinator, Jennifer Mellott. "Especially with our live entertainment."

One performance in particular struck a special chord. Country star Buddy Jewell gave a personal performance for a cause he says is close to his heart. His cousin Michael was once a St. Jude patient.

"Michael wound up passing away from leukemia," said Jewell. "But St. Jude was so good to the family, my aunt and uncle and all of us. I just always try to be able to give back where I can, so that's why I'm here today, I'm here to honor Michael"

The event that aims to aid other children who share Michael's struggle.

"One hundred percent of what you donate will go back to St. Jude," said Mellott.

Donations didn't only come in dollar bills. Organizers also collected more than a thousand toys that will be delivered to children at the Peoria St. Jude clinic currently undergoing chemotherapy.

"I've gotten to know some of the St. Jude kids and I've stayed in touch with their families," said Mellott. "And to know that you're a part of something so much bigger. There're no words to describe it."

For those who want to be a small part of this bigger cause, Bergner's accepts donations for St. Jude at its store year-round.
