The Passing Of The Greatest Generation

Decatur – Memorial Day is just one week away.  70 years ago this month, May 1945, combat action against German forces during World War II ended.  Fighting against Japan ended in August of 1945.

16 million Americans, known as The Greatest Generation, fought in the war.  But now those heroes are in their late 80's and mostly in their 90's.

They are passing away at a rate of 492 a day.  That is a rate of about one person every three minutes.  Out of the original 16 million only an estimated 855,070 survive today.  Just 29,889 are still living in Illinois.

It is estimated that within 20 years there will be no living veterans to recount their experiences during World War II.
