Decatur residents encouraged to help clean up the city

DECATUR - Decatur officials are encouraging residents to volunteer in helping clean up the community during a citywide cleanup effort this week.

Officials say the cleanup effort will conclude on May 22.  During this week, residents are encouraged to pick up trash around their neighborhoods, clean personal properties, and to take on any planned home exterior maintenance projects.

Volunteers are also encouraged to join the Coalition of Neighborhood Organizations, the United Way, and Archer Daniels Midland in cleaning up other neighborhoods during several planned events this week.  We've included a list of scheduled events below:

May 19: Fans Field Park, at the corner of East Garfield Avenue and North Woodford Street
May 20: Torrence Park, in the 1600 and 1700 block of East Grand Avenue
May 21: GM Square, at Monroe Park
May 22: Cleanup of City Corridors

All scheduled cleaning events will take place from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on their respective days.  City officials also say they will have dumpsters at these locations for large item collection and tire collection.  However, certain items, such as electronics and hazardous materials, will not be accepted.
