French Academy Students Honor Civil War Dead

Decatur – Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day.  It was designed to honor soldiers killed in the Civil War.  Today, Memorial Day honors all of those who have died fighting for our country.

Tuesday students from French Academy walked to Greenwood Cemetery where Civil War soldiers are buried.  It was a combination history lesson and chance to honor those who died in the war that claimed 600,000 lives.

One by one students placed American flags next to grave markers.  “We were putting flags in the grave to support people that fought for us,” one student told WAND News.

Memorial Day is always commemorated on the last Monday in the month of May.
