A-O Wrestling Coach Retiring

ARGENTA -- Longtime Coach Gary Cook is calling it a career, following his 38th season with the Argenta-Oreana wrestling team.

The school confirmed Cook's retirement Wednesday afternoon.

"I could not be happier for Coach Cook, but very thankful and honored to have had the privilege to work with him," said Argenta-Oreana athletic director Dan Sheehan. "Coach Cook is a class act and has spent his life dedicated to A-O and Wrestling impacting students over the past 38 years."

Cook's career with the Bombers included a 570-258-1 dual meet record.  The 570 wins are the third most all-time for a coach at one school in the state of Illinois.

Cook was selection to the Illinois Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in 2003.

Under his watch, Bomber wrestlers accounted for 78 state appearances, 19 state placers (top-4), and two state champions (Herb Porter, 1988 & Jerry Jontry, 1994).

A search for his replacement is underway.
