Righter Wants Rail Congestion On Right Track

Mattoon - State Senator Dale Righter, (R) Mattoon, says IDOT has agreed to conduct a feasibility study into solving rail congestion problems in Mattoon.

"We have reached a point where rail congestion is unbearable and it's harming students, causing traffic congestion nightmares and potentially creating life-and-death situations for emergency responders trying to save lives," Righter said in a prepared statement.

The main rails in Mattoon are served by the Canadian National Railroad, CN. Amtrak also uses CN tracks for daily passenger service between Carbondale and Chicago.  A CN freight line also connects Mattoon with Decatur.

Righter indicates trains frequently block crossings in Mattoon.
