Soldier Honored With Purple Heart

Decatur – Wounded in action an Army Reserve soldier has been awarded a Purple Heart medal at a special ceremony Thursday at the Decatur Civic Center.

Staff Sgt. Willie Jones was wounded in action on June 18, 2013 while serving in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  Jones serves with the Decatur based 236th Inland Cargo Transfer Company. 

Jones was presented with the Purple Heart by Brigadier General Jose Burgos.  Burgos is the commander of the 1st Mission Support Command.  Jones was also presented with a Combat Action Badge.

The Purple Heart is a United States military medal that is awarded in the name of the President.  It is presented to those who have been wounded or killed while serving with the U.S. military.

Sgt. Jones will be getting married in two weeks in Iowa.  He is marrying Master Sgt. Kim Farrow.
