University of Illinois police investigate vandalism of Alma Mater statue

URBANA - The University of Illinois Police Department is investigating an incident that resulted in the university's Alma Mater statue being vandalized.

Authorities say the University of Illinois Police Department received a report on May 18 that the front and marble base of the Alma Mater statue had been sprayed with a substance.  Upon checking surveillance video, officers say they found a group of people standing near the statue at about 2:25 a.m. on May 18.  Officers also say that it appears one person is largely responsible for spraying the substance on the statue.

Authorities also say that the substance was identified as either chalk or paint by campus workers who attempted to clean the statue.  The University of Illinois Police Department is actively investigating this incident.  If you have any information regarding this crime, you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at (217) 373-8477.
