Adjutant General of Illinois National Guard to Retire

SPRINGFIELD - Major General Daniel M. Krumrei is announcing his retirement after 38 years serving the country.

His official retirement from the National Guard is scheduled July 4, 2015.

In a statement he sent to the Soldiers and Airmen of the Illinois National Guard, he spoke about what an honor it was to serve alongside "America's latest greatest generation."

He said his time in the National Guard provided "amazing opportunities, education, and experiences" and thanked his wife, family, employers, enlisted, warrants, officers, state employees, contractors, and volunteers for their support.

In his statement, he also mentioned he keeps only 34 pictures in his office. Each one is a picture of an Illinois Guardsman who lost his or her life in combat. Seeing them every day reminded Maj. Gen. Krumrei of their extraordinary sacrifices.
