Memorial Day Ceremony at Camp Butler

Springfield- May 25th is a day dedicated to remembering the men and women who served in our armed forces. Dozens of people came out to Camp Butler to honor family, friends and others on Memorial Day.

Jean Goretski shared with WAND that she was in World War II as a military barrel detail. Now at 92 years old, she shares her wisdom with others who will listen.

For James Harnacke, Monday was a day to share memories of his family tradition.

"My father was in the Navy in the Vietnam War. My brother and I both served in the 80's and 90's and my son was a sniper in Afghanistan in 09 and 10," Harnacke said.

Phillipa Porter told her story about her son who always had an interest in the military. As a child he played with GI Joe figures. As a high schooler he asked his mother to sign for him to be in the military. Chris Porter died 25 years ago and that is one of the main reasons she sings at the annual Memorial Day ceremonies in Springfield.

"It's the only thing I can do for him and all of the other people that have fallen, so it's a responsibility that I love to do," Porter said.

May 25th has always and will continue to be a day for many to remember the lives that will never be forgotten.
