Lawmakers to consider budget proposal

SPRINGFIELD - Illinois lawmakers are set to consider a new 2016 state budget proposal this week.

According to Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, the $36.3 billion state budget that's being proposed is designed to benefit vulnerable and middle-class citizens.  However, in order to make up the more than $3 billion difference, Madigan is also asking for lawmakers to approve a tax increase.

The proposed budget also has its fair share of opponents, including Governor Bruce Rauner.  Rauner has said that he wishes to see certain measures passed by state lawmakers before considering tax hikes.

Illinois faces a budget shortfall of about $6 billion in the next fiscal year.
