Urbana Fire Department responds to house fire

URBANA - Urbana Fire Department officials say crews responded to a report of a house fire on the city's east side Wednesday evening.

Officials say firefighters were dispatched to a home in the 800 block of South Cottage Grove at about 6:05 p.m. for a report of a house fire.  Firefighters say they saw smoke and flames coming out of a basement window on the west side of the building, and immediately began to extinguish the flames.

Officials also say a bystander attempted to save pets that were in the home by breaking windows and opening a door, leading to the rescue of one dog.  Unfortunately, one dog, one cat, and one hamster died as a result of the fire.  The home's residents were not present at the time of this incident.  The fire was considered to be controlled at about 6:13 p.m.

No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported in this incident.  The home is considered uninhabitable, with the structure needing many repairs.  The Urbana Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire.  We will provide more details as they become available.
