Bloomington man found dead in elevator shaft

BLOOMINGTON - McLean County officials say a Bloomington maintenance worker has died in an elevator-related incident earlier this week.

Authorities say John Hoeniges, 56, was found at the bottom of an elevator shaft at the McLean County Law and Justice Center.  Witnesses have told authorities that Hoeniges was last seen heading toward the elevator shaft on Tuesday.  Hoeniges was later found by co-workers.

McLean County Coroner Kathy Davis says the preliminary results of an autopsy revealed that Hoeniges died of blunt trauma and compressional asphyxia.  Davis also says Hoeniges' death was likely an accident.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office, U.S. Department of Labor, and Illinois Department of Labor is investigating this incident.  We will provide more information as it becomes available.
