HSHS St. Mary's Hospital offering tips as part of Men's Health Month

DECATUR - As part of Men's Health Month this June, HSHS St. Mary's Hospital officials are reminding central Illinois men to schedule regular check-ups and prevention screenings.

St. Mary's officials say men have a higher mortality rate for conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, and that men are less likely to see a doctor to address health concerns.  Therefore, St. Mary's officials are offering the following tips to help men stay healthy and improve health:

- Have a primary care provider, and schedule regular appointments.
- If you smoke, try to quit.  Individuals who quit smoking have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, pulmonary disease, and other illnesses.
- Eat a balanced diet, as it can help in avoiding chronic diseases such as diabetes.
- Get at least 30 minutes of aerobic or muscle-building exercise in each day.
- Update your immunizations regularly.
- Monitor any existing health conditions you may have.
