Champaign police arrest robbery suspect

CHAMPAIGN - Champaign police says officers have made an arrest in connection with a bank robbery that happened Thursday morning.

Champaign police say officers were dispatched to Regions Bank at about 9:16 a.m. in regards to a reported robbery.  Upon arriving, officers found that the suspect had fled the scene.  However, several witnesses to the robbery provided details to help identify the suspect, including one witness who followed the suspect and later provided officers with an updated clothing description and direction of travel.

Authorities say officers located and arrested a person matching descriptions given in West Side Park moments later.  According to Champaign police, officers also found evidence from the crime on the individual, identified as Raheem K. Shakur, 49.

Shakur faces preliminary charges of robbery and aggravated assault.  Champaign police are urging anyone with information on this crime to call the Crime Stoppers at (217) 373-8477.
