Lighting Greenwood Cemetery

Decatur – Shining a light on Decatur's rich history.

Solar lights are being sold to be placed on graves in Greenwood Cemetery.  The money raised from the light sales will be used for a garden and a columbarium to hold urns from cremations.

“Five dollars is a donation pretty much,” Lynn Dixon of Greenwood Cemetery told WAND's Doug Wolfe.  “Then you get a light and place it on the grave of a loved one.”

The cemetery, operated by Decatur Township, hopes to raise $20,000 from three major fundraiser's.  One of those fundraiser's will possibly be a 2K run this summer.

Dixon plans on leaving the cemetery open until midnight Saturday and Sunday night this weekend for people to drive through and enjoy the lights.

Greenwood has 30,000 graves.  It opened in 1828.
