Johnson Shuts Down Notre Dame; Illinois Advances to Regional Final
CHAMPAIGN (AP) -- Drasen Johnson threw a three-hitter to help Illinois beat Notre Dame 3-0 on Sunday in the NCAA regional tournament.
Johnson (10-3) threw 106 pitches, and only allowed one base runner after the fifth inning, a single by Ryan Bull. Adam Walton, Reid Roper and Ryne Roper drove in runs for the Illini (49-8).
Ryan Smoyer (9-1) was the loser for the Irish (37-22).
Cavan Biggio and Bull each had two hits for Notre Dame. The Irish were later eliminated by Wright State 4-0.
The Illini have won 18 consecutive home games, the longest current streak in the NCAA. Illinois, 24-2 at Illinois Field this season, had a Big Ten-record 27-game winning streak from March 30 to May 20.
Illinois and Wright State will square off in the regional final Monday at 1 PM. If Wright State wins, the two teams will play again 55 minutes after the conclusion of the game.
