New App Count Calories with Just the Snap of a Picture

CHAMPAIGN--A new app could help you count calories and all you have to do is snap a picture of your meal and upload it to Instagram.

It's called Im2Calories. The app's algorithm is designed to analyze food photos and estimate the number of calories pictured.

Nutritionists say its a smart way to make it easier for people to be conscious of how much they consume.

However, there is some concern over its accuracy.

It's also important to remember that counting calories isn't the only thing to consider when trying to eat healthy.

"Calories are a good place to start as a baseline if you're trying to watch what you eat. But calories are not everything," said nutritionist, Ashley Lucas. "It's definitely the quality of food that you're eating, whether you're eating whole foods versus processed foods. There's other things than just calories. There's the macro-nutrients, so fat and carbohydrates and proteins."

The app's developers are not releasing when it will be available. However, Google is currently working to patent the technology.
