URBANA – The Urbana Park District is offering free yoga in Meadowbrook Park starting every Saturday (except July 4) from June 13 to August 29.
This is the third time summer Yoga in the Park will be offered. The program lasts from 9 AM to 10 AM each session. While participants should bring their own yoga mats, the Urbana Park District will have extras if needed.
Instructors teach on a rotational basis, giving participants the opportunity to experience several different techniques and teaching styles.
Elsie Hedgspeth, fitness and wellness coordinator, has gotten a firsthand look at the benefits of the free yoga program.
“Yoga in the Park is a program that helps the Urbana Park District to showcase the beauty of Meadowbrook Park, and provides an opportunity for everyone in the community to improve their health regardless of their ability, monetary restrictions or other factors that might discourage them from participating in traditional fitness classes,” Hedgspeth explains.
According to last year's reports, the program averages about 50 participants each week, with up to 80 participants on its most popular days.
The program is free, but donations are welcome and encouraged. Donations go to the Urbana Park District Youth Scholarship Fund that provides financial aid to residents who want to take part in programs but lack the necessary funds.
