Central Illinois Couple Celebrates More than 70 Years of Marriage

NEWMAN--A Central Illinois couple is celebrated a major milestone: more than 70 years of wedded bliss.

Colin and Frances Davidson have been linked together for most of their lives.

"I've loved her for 71 years," said Colin. "And I assume she's loved me for that."

"It's been a great life," said Frances. "I wouldn't change it for anything. I'd take it again, just like it is."

The Davidsons' love story started when they were freshmen in high school.

"When I spoke to this young lady, I thought, 'Hmm. I like this,'" said Colin.

They didn't start dating until their junior year. But when prom was upon them, Frances knew she had found the one.

"He wasn't the type to get dressed up and go to dances, but because I wanted to go, he went," said Frances. "And I thought, 'yea, that'll work.'"

The high school sweethearts married right after graduation on June 14th, 1944. This Sunday, they'll celebrate 71 years of wedded bliss.

"That's probably a world-record. I don't know," said Colin.

Keeping the peace is the secret to their long and strong marriage.

"We really don't have any arguments or stuff, if he wants to do something and I'm not really, real hap on it, I'll still do it," said Frances.

And during the few rough patches they did hit, Frances kept Colin's feet on solid ground.

"She's been through times when I was about to fall apart, but she kept us all going," said Colin. "And everything worked out."

"When you say 70 years, or 71 years, you say, 'Oh my that's a long time,'" said Frances. "But when you look back on it, it isn't. They have gone by so fast."
