UPDATE: Man arrested in connection with Springfield woman's death

UPDATE - Sangamon County State's Attorney John Milhiser has announced that one man has been arrested in connection with the June 14 death of a Springfield woman.

Milhiser says Mondavier Knight, 23, was arrested on Monday in connection with the death of 24-year-old Tamy Gomez-Vasquez.  Springfield police say Gomez-Vasquez was found dead at her home in the 2300 block of South 14th Street.  Sangamon County Coroner Cinda Edwards says the preliminary results of an autopsy revealed that Gomez-Vasquez died of injuries consistent with a homicide.

Authorities say Knight was arrested in Yazoo County, Mississippi.  He will be extradited to Illinois to face first-degree murder charges.

The Springfield Police Department continues to investigate this incident.  We will provide more updates as they become available.

SPRINGFIELD – The Springfield Police are investigating the death of a 24 year old female in the 2300 Block of South 14th Street.


Officers responded to a call at approximately 9:45 PM on Sunday, June 14 concerning a woman who was found unconscious in her home. Friends of the women were concerned they had no heard from her recently and made the call.

Police say the death appears to be suspicious in nature and are currently investigating the occurrence. Cause of death is unknown, and an autopsy is scheduled for today.

Springfield Police are also trying to locate a person who has possible information in the matter. The individual has not yet been located.

The Sangamon County Coroner's Office will release the name of the victim at the appropriate time.
