Champaign police make arrest in June 5 bank robbery

CHAMPAIGN - The Champaign Police Department has announced that one man has been arrested in connection with a bank robbery that happened on June 5.

Champaign police say officers responded to a report of a bank robbery at First Financial Bank, located in the 1600 block of South Prospect Avenue, at about 9:17 a.m.  Upon arriving, officers learned that an unknown suspect entered the bank, gave a teller a note demanding money, and left the bank with an undetermined amount of cash.

Champaign police also say that detectives continued to investigate this incident, eventually developing information that led to the identity of the suspect, with an arrest warrant being issued soon after.  Authorities say the suspect, identified as Harvey Blakely, 29, was arrested in his Champaign home on June 17.

Blakely is currently in custody at the Champaign County Correctional Center where he awaits formal charges.  Champaign police continue to investigate this incident.
