DECATUR – Church leaders are encouraging you to join them in prayer this evening at a vigil.

St. Peter AME Church, 515 South Church Street in Decatur, Illinois is inviting everyone to stand in solidarity and prayer with their sister church in Charleston, South Carolina. The vigil takes place at 6:00 PM.

Dylann Storm Roof, 21, is accused of shooting and killing nine people at a historic black church in Charleston. The County Coroner says the suspect had joined the group for Bible study before becoming aggressive and violent.

Officials say the group thought the shooter wanted to join them for the Bible study, where he stayed for nearly an hour before the shooting.

Authorities are investigating the incident as a potential hate crime.

The pastor of the church was among those killed. Reverend Clementa Pinckney was the Democratic state senator for South Carolina's 45th district for the last 14 years. He was the first victim identified.
