CHAMPAIGN – The Champaign County State's Attorney's Office and the Piatt County State's Attorney's Office have filed Criminal Sexual Assault charges against Champaign Police Officer Jared Gale. There is currently no indication that any of the allegations occurred while Gale was on-duty as a Champaign Police Officer.

Charges allege that Gale committed acts of sexual penetration through use of force against two women in Champaign County on November 9, 2013 and in Piatt County between July 4 and July 28, 2012.

The Piatt County case charges Gale with one count of Criminal Sexual Assault, a class 1 felony, punishable by 5 to 15 years incarceration in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

The Champaign County case charges Gale with one count of Criminal Sexual Assault. They are also charging Gale with one count of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Assault which alleges Gale caused injury to the victim. Another count of Aggravated Domestic Battery alleges Gale strangled his victim.

Aggravated Criminal Sexual Assault is a class X felony punishable by 6 to 30 years incarceration. Aggravated Domestic Battery is a class 2 felony punishable by 3 to 7 years incarceration.

Another allegation of a third victim was brought forward, but it occurred in 2007 and falls outside the statute of limitations.  The victims in the two charged offenses and the uncharged offense were in long term relationships with Gale at the time of the assaults.  The case came to the attention of the University of Illinois Police Department on May 5, 2015. This report came from the Champaign victim and was turned over to the Illinois State Police for further investigation. Investigators were then found the two other women and investigated their allegations.  Champaign State's Attorney Julia Rietz and Piatt County's State's Attorney Dana Rhoades have been working with Illinois State Police Investigators throughout the investigation.

Judge Tom Difanis of Champaign County issued a warrant for Gale on June 23 with a $250,000 bond. Judge Roger Webber issued a warrant for Gale setting bond at $250,000 also on June 23. Investigators arrested Gale on those warrants on June 23, 2015.

Gale has been taken to the Piatt County Correctional Center. Formal arraignment is being scheduled for both counties.  Further inquiries should be directed to Champaign County State's Attorney Julia Rietz or Piatt County State's Attorney Dana Rhoades.
