Sheriff’s Office Warns Residents of Jury Scam

Posted: Updated:
MACON COUNTY – The Macon County Sheriff's Office says a jury scam is trying to convince residents there is a warrant out for their arrest.

Authorities report numerous Macon County residents have received calls stating they had failed to report for scheduled jury duty and that a warrant was going to be issued for their arrest. Those who received calls say the caller identified themselves as a federal marshal. The caller then claims a cash payment is necessary to avoid an arrest warrant.

Lt. Jonathon Butts of the Macon County Sheriff's Office and Jay Scott of the Macon County State's Attorney's Office want to alert residents to beware as these calls show are showing a 217 area code. Regardless, it is very unlikely these calls are being made locally.

No resident would receive a call of this type from either the Macon County Court or the Macon County Sheriff's Office.
