Area Youth Attend “Youth to Washington” in D.C.

CENTRAL ILLINOIS – A selection of area high school students attended the annual “Youth to Washington” Tour from June 12 – 19.

The event is sponsored by electric and telephone cooperatives in Illinois to introduce rural students to the democratic form of government and the cooperative business model. 65 rural Illinois youth leaders attended this trip. They were among the 1,660 young leaders from across the country.

Ally Irwin and Charles Meaker of Mattoon, Illinois represented Coles-Moultrie Electric Cooperative. They met with Congressman John Shimkus. Sophomores and juniors in high schools within the service area of Coles-Moultrie Electric Cooperative are eligible to participate in this program.

Kyler Clark, Tucker Launer and Emily Slightom of Auburn, Illinois also attended the tour. They represent Rural Electric Convenience Cooperative and met with Congressman Rodney Davis. Juniors in high schools within the Rural Electric Convenience Cooperative are eligible to participate.

The students were able to visit several D.C. highlights including: Gettysburg, The U.S. Supreme Court, several Smithsonian Museums and the Capitol among many others.
