Illinois State Geological Survey appoints new director

CHAMPAIGN - Prairie Research Institute officials say a new director has been appointed to oversee the Illinois State Geological Survey.

Officials say Richard Berg, Ph.D., was appointed to the position.  Prior to his appointment, Berg served as interim director and chief scientist at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign-based ISGS.  Berg says he is "gratified" to have the chance to lead the Geological Survey.

The Illinois State Geological Survey was founded in 1905, and provides earth science information about the state's economic vitality, environmental quality, and public safety.  For more information about the ISGS, visit
