Registered sex offender arrested after Urbana police find 5 kids in vehicle

Posted: Updated:
URBANA - The Urbana Police Department has announced that a registered sex offender was arrested Sunday afternoon after he was found with five children in his vehicle.

Our partners at the News-Gazette are reporting that Duane Edwards, 55, was arrested after an Urbana police officer found five children, ages two through seven, in Edwards' vehicle during a vehicle stop on Sunday.  Authorities say the children were from Mattoon, and that the children's parents and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services were notified by officers after the arrest.

Edwards is currently facing a preliminary charge of being a child sex offender in a prohibited zone.  Authorities also say Edwards had previously served time for an aggravated criminal sexual assault charge in Jefferson County.  We will provide more details as they become available.
