Red Cross offering Independence Day safety tips

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD - The American Red Cross is offering several safety tips that could help central Illinois residents safely enjoy the holiday weekend.

Red Cross officials say motorists should use their seat belts, observe speed limits, and pay attention to the road while driving.  Additionally, motorists should clean their windows and lights, and should use caution in work zones.  Authorities also say drivers should not drink and drive.

Officials say if you wish to set fireworks off at home, to only light one firework at a time, and to never attempt to relight a "dud."  Never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, homes, or vehicles, and never give fireworks to small children.  Those who light fireworks should wear proper eye protection, and should keep a supply of water close by.

Officials also say residents should supervise their grills while in use, and to never grill indoors.  Red Cross officials advise keeping the grill out in an open space, away from anything that could catch fire, and to make sure people and animals stay away from the grill.  Long-handled tools should also be used, to help keep the chef safe.
